About Us - Riga Christ the King Roman Catholic Parish

The Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King in Riga is served by the Christ the King Roman Catholic Parish of Riga — Holy Masses are also streamed on YouTube.

Location: Meža prospekts 86, Riga. It serves the Catholic community of Sarkandaugava.

Beginnings: The first prayer rooms at Duntes iela 52 became too small.

Construction: Begun in 1935 to a design by I. Blankenburgs and K. Reisons. The foundations were consecrated on 27 October 1935.

Funding: Due to a shortage of money, the parish organized charity events. In 1938 the project was reworked by A. Strazdiņš. In 1939 Kārlis Ulmanis donated 5,000 lats, and in 1940 Pope Pius XII donated a gilded cross for a lottery.

Completion: Construction lasted until 1944. The church was consecrated on 26 April 1943.

Clergy: The first parish priest was Kazimirs Vilnis. After the war the parish was led by Pāvils Jankovskis (buried in the garden). Archbishop Zbigņevs Stankevičs also served here as a vicar.

Surroundings and tower: Nearby are the St. Joseph Cemetery and the presbytery built in 1936. The church tower was built according to the original design only in 2003–2004.
