About Us - St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church of Riga

In 1934, the Chapel of St. Joseph was originally established in Sarkandaugava, at 52 Duntes Street.

The St. Joseph parish decided to establish a presence in Pārdaugava (separating from the St. Albert parish) by converting a former cinema hall/warehouse at 12/14 Embūtes Street. The Riga St. Joseph Roman Catholic Parish was officially founded in 1943. The church was consecrated on July 1 of the same year.

During the years of Soviet occupation, thanks to the courage of the priests, the church was not allowed to be closed, and it became the Catholic spiritual center of Pārdaugava.

From 1986 to 1992, under the leadership of Provost Valfrīds Vīnbergs and the parish, the church was practically rebuilt from scratch. Due to Soviet restrictions, construction began ingeniously — the new brick building was erected around the old wooden structure, which was then removed from the inside. The new church was consecrated in 1993. In 1996, the Bethany Sisters community from the Netherlands donated 19th-century Neo-Renaissance style pews and an altar table. Currently, the main and side altars feature three paintings by artist Māra Kravale (installed between 1997 and 2000).

Services in the parish are held in Latvian and Polish.
