About Us - Riga congregation of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness

In the holy scriptures, the Lord says that whenever the principles of religion are no longer followed on earth, He descends to earth Himself with His associates or sends His Representatives. This is what happened 500 years ago, when the Lord Caitanya Himself descended to earth with His closest associate, Lord Nityananda. They taught the chanting of the holy names to fill the world with love. And Srila Prabhupada brought this teaching of love to the West. He translated the holy scriptures into English, taught how to worship God in the temple, sing beautiful songs, and lovingly prepare divine food — prasadam. In Riga, this teaching of love was brought in 1979 by the first devotees from Russia. The first Harinamas began (chanting of the holy names in the streets), the first Namahattas, where people learned to prepare food made from non-violently obtained ingredients and studied the holy scriptures. Soon the books were translated into Latvian.
